Education & Curriculum
We provide an outstanding, broad and balanced curriculum. The emphasis is on English, Maths, Science and ICT in all year groups. We ensure that the core subjects are taught in the mornings when our boys are more focused and their concentration is high. In the afternoons the curriculum becomes more practical and active and includes cycling, PE, art and design, music, fishing, outdoor pursuits, horticulture, horse riding, etc. In all these activities the focus is on teamwork and developing social skills.
We have a lower school that caters for boys from Year 3 to 7 and this includes our nurture group for boys who have particular needs. From Year 8, boys move to upper school on the main school site and this includes separate Key Stage 3 and 4 areas, and a class that is run on a primary model for our more vulnerable boys.
In Year 10 and 11 our boys follow a wide range of GCSE’s and other vocational qualifications. It is in the later years when we see the most progress as Ofsted noted, “the most rapid academic progress is apparent in the last two secondary years as the full impact of the school’s work takes effect.”(Ofsted 2012)
The overall aim of the curriculum is to enable all the young people to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens. All pupils are offered a wide range of learning experiences covering different areas of skills and knowledge. A variety of learning activities are offered to try to ensure that pupils of different aptitudes, attributes and skills have opportunities for success. The 24-hour curriculum contributes to the development of well-rounded individuals who are well prepared for future life. A creative and flexible approach to the National Curriculum is intended to reengage learners and stimulate interest in learning and address deficiencies in basic knowledge and understanding.
